A deep slumber
Swallowed by the sea
I dreamt of a million painted faces
Staring at me.
Laughing lips
And shining eyes,
They captured my mind
With their lies.
Watching them smile
From deep within my dream,
Walking their ropes,
I stifled a scream.
The ground beneath me collapsed,
And then I was falling
The faces inched closer,
On all fours, crawling.
The wind in my hair
And fear in my eyes,
I crossed the road
Breaking all old ties.
The bags in their hands
The smiles on their faces,
I knew old love
Never left any traces.
As I opened my eyes
Looked out at the sea,
I smelled the wind
And fresh earth under me.
Feeling the weight
The noise of this lull
Clinging to the edge
Of a life so dull.
I gathered myself
Shirking the memories
Leaping into the unknown
No more telling the stories.
One step at a time
A new life and a new place
My shadow abandoned me
As I struggled to find my space.
One step at a time
I am now wide awake
Living among strangers
Until I sleep again.
